The “Platanus Concert with bFaaaP” was held, by the Piano Society Platanus of Tokyo Institute of Technology, at Suzukake Science day on May 12, 2024. bFaaaP (barrier-Free assist as a Pedal) is an AI barrier-free auxiliary pedal system. bFaaaP provides an inclusive design and enables those with leg disabilities and small children to play the piano with a pedal.

The bFaaaP system includes two components: a smartphone and a pedal device. The head angle is detected by smartphone AI. The head angle information is transmitted through BLE (Bluetooth technology) to the pedal device. The pedal device is then actuated to depress a piano pedal, thereby producing a sustained tone. When the head is up, the piano pedal is likewise released. In this concert video, Tomo Shishido, a bFaaaP and Platanus member, first introduced bFaaaP system and mechanics and bFaaaP members (0:0012:15). Then, four Platanus members actually played the piano with bFaaaP. The music pieces include:

(1) Salut d’amour, E.Elgar (12:1516:00)

(2) Arabesque No.2, C.Debussy (16:0020:55)

(3) Kashiyou No Tsuki, E.Nakamura (20:5527:45)

(4) Impromptus Op.142-4, F.Schubert (27:4535:00)

We all wish everybody, without being excluded (an inclusive design), can enjoy playing the piano with a pedal and bFaaaP helps provide a joy of music to all.
