2024工大祭Platanus_with_bFaaaPワークショップ

The “Platanus with bFaaaP” event was held, by the Piano Society Platanus of Institute of Science Tokyo, at Kodai Festival on November 3, 2024. bFaaaP (barrier-Free assist as a Pedal) is an AI barrier-free auxiliary pedal system. bFaaaP provides an inclusive design and enables those with leg disabilities and small children to play the piano with a pedal.

The bFaaaP system includes two components: a smartphone and a pedal device (“Switch” for electric pianos and keyboards and “Pro” for acoustic pianos: gland and upright pianos). The head angle is detected by smartphone AI. The head angle information is transmitted through BLE (Bluetooth technology) to the pedal device. The pedal device is then actuated to depress a piano pedal, thereby producing a sustained tone. When the head is up, the piano pedal is likewise released. In this event video, Tomo Shishido, a bFaaaP and Platanus member, first introduced bFaaaP system and mechanics and then bFaaaP members. Three Platanus members actually played an electric piano with a pedal by using bFaaaP. The music pieces include:

(1) Debussy, Arabesque No.2, C. (9:28-13:52)

(2) Debussy, Clair de Lune (23:15-25:42)

(3) Haydn, Piano Sonata in E-flat major, Hob. XVI:49 (31:57-37:42)

Then, at the bFaaaP workshop (39:21-54:18 ) , many people, including adults and small children, actually tried bFaaaP. They seemed to enjoy bFaaaP performance.

We all wish everybody, without being excluded (an inclusive design), can enjoy playing the piano with a pedal and bFaaaP helps provide a joy of music to all.
